2019-2020 Concentration: 'Interconnection of Individuals Throughout History'
by Gracyn Applegate
For my investigation, I explored the question: "How are individuals connected throughout history?". To answer this, I combined images from historic places in both their past and present states, using contrast of color and transparency. Not only this, but I made a point to create a broken and somewhat unaware connection between individuals in both realms, from walkers to bikers to car-drivers to explorers. This was to highlight the idea that the current generation walks through their lives -- and destinations -- with ignorance of the fights for freedom and flees from devastation that occurred in otherwise ordinary places. The world has lost its appreciation for history in its fast-paced race towards evolution. While an admirable mindset, the sacredness of the events that brought us to our current state must not be lost.
The above images in order:
- 1972: Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 (Andes Mountains)
- 1970: Ancash Earthquake (Peru)
- 1948: WWII Candy Bomber (Germany)
- 1944: D-Day (France)
- 1929-1933: Great Depression (USA)
- 1945: Bombing of Hiroshima (Japan)
- 1978: Jonestown Massacre (Guyana)
- 2011: Joplin Tornado (USA)
- 1930: Salt March (India)
- Any high school shooting in history, for there have sadly been far too many to specify
- 1965: Selma Marches (USA)
- 1989: Tiananmen Square Protest (China)
- 1912: Sinking of the Titanic (Atlantic Ocean)
- 2001: Attacks of 9/11 (USA)
I encourage you to research any of the above events if you are unaware of its occurrence, or even your connection to it. After all, nobody is exempt from history...
